Setting it up, step by step
Spot the Xtream option in the app
To IPTV Smarters it is "Login with Xtream Codes API". To TiViMate it is "Xtream Codes login". The rest mostly clip it down to "Xtream", or plain "API". Wherever a player puts up both this and M3U, take this.
Put in the server URL
The whole address, http:// out front and the port on the tail, formed like http://example.com:8080. After the port, nothing. More logins die on this single field than any other.
Put in username and password
Lift the pair straight off the message and mind the capitals, as they are case sensitive. Cosmetic only, the profile name bears on nothing whatsoever.
Save it and wait for the sync
Down come the channels, the on-demand content and the guide, all on their own. Stash those three values somewhere safe: with them, adding a second set later runs under a minute, and without them, a message to support.
If it does not work first time
The app wants an M3U URL in its place
A scattering of older players grasp playlists only. Reach for the M3U link out of that same activation message, which wraps the identical account differently. What to do with it is set out in the M3U guide.

On its own the format is no more than a means of handing over a password, a username and a server address, and run-of-the-mill apps across every app store make use of it. None of it is restricted.
